Do not buy! 2010-02-02 |
| By Peter J. Williams (Wauregan, CT United States) |
After trying Norton 3.0 on my Windows 7 computer for 2 months, I strongly recommend not to install this crap.
I have stayed away from Norton products for years. I should not of gone back.
Your computer will be plagued with a dialog box requiring you to set up a Norton account.
I chose not to set one up. So when this box appears your computer will lock up unless you
register for an account with Symantec. I have tried multiple times to remove this with Task Manager.
To no avail, the only way around it is to reboot the computer. Also, for some unknown reason the firewall and anit-virus
will intermitently stop working. A previous poster noted this problem. This will leave your computer
vulnerable to attack. Norton does not have a solution for these problems.
This program is not even worth 1 star. Microsoft Security Essentials works a lot better.
Unless you want a persistant headache and a lighter wallet, skip this crap!!!! |
This Product Crashes on Windows 7 and Drops Firewall 2010-02-02 |
| By Hugh L. Scott (Breckenridge, Co USA) |
This product truly sucks. It has a tendency to crash under Windows 7 (error 8504,4) and then drops the firewall and anti-virus. This is very, very bad since it puts your computer in a wide open state, ripe for rootkit installation, drive-by downloads, worms, viruses etc. This product virtually ensures a security breach on a Windows 7 computer. Do yourself a favour and do a web search for this error code 8504,4 and look at the agony this product causes.
Update Feb 15: Still sucks. Symmantec used to provide a fine product suite. Now, they are interested only in selling more crap with constant badgering to subscribe to additional services. Thier website is useless for tech support, the solution is always to byu something. The latest, Norton 360 dies when it tries to become your online backup service after about 2 weeks. |
Terrible 2009-12-27 |
| By M. Mckiernan (Columbus, Ohio) |
They have terrible customer service. I started to use AVG because it's free and much better than Norton. I was just waiting for my service to lapse on the Norton when they automatically charged my credit card to renew. It's in the FINE print when you sign up. You have to send like 10 emails to stop the automatic re-enrollement.
In order for you to get your money back after the automatic re-enroll you must sit through 30 minutes of the most mind numbing music ever composed. It's a 100% ploy to get you off the phone to stop the cancellation. I love rap, rock, classical, and pop. No person in their right mind could possibly sit through this music without holding it away from your ear.
Hung up a few times and called on different days. Each call was no less than 30 minute wait and some calls were automatic hang ups after connection. Took me 3-4 hours on 4-5 days to get refund.
NOT WORTH IT!!! Go with AVG...it's free and worked all the bugs that Norton left on!! |
Good anti-virus, but....... 2009-12-13 |
| By Bruce E. Munck (Gaston, SC United States) |
| About a month ago my pc (Vista Home Premium) contracted a virus right under the nose of the virus software I was running. The virus grayed out all shutdown choices except for "turn machine off and install updates", a choice I refused to make since I was confident that those "updates" were actually files the virus wanted to install. I used the power button to turn my machine off and then purchased Norton 360 in hopes it would be able to get rid of the virus. When I booted the machine I booted to the Norton DVD and waited anxiously as it reported to me that the definitions were nearly a year old and advised me to update them online. Fortunately Norton was able to eradicate the virus and get me back up with absolutely no losses. Once Windows was up and running I completed the install of Norton. My complaints of the program are minor, but the issues are rather irritating. My first complaint may have already been corrected: Norton continually bombards you with messages about setting up automatic backup sets and it gets to be quite annoying because it happens with such abominable regularity. It appears that you might be able to stop that by selecting "Manual Backups" from the menu system. My other complaint may be harder to solve...at least I haven't found an answer yet although I have done a number of internet searches. For some unknown (to me, anyway) reason, Norton 360 removes my browser home page selection and inserts Norton's page there instead. I have changed it back to my regular home page four times in the last month but Norton continues to hijack it about once a week. I hate to throw $70 in the garbage, but I will not allow this to continue very much longer; after all, I paid to get rid of virulent behavior not embrace it! My last resort will be to contact Norton directly for a workaround. Those issues aside, Norton 360 has been protecting my computer very well. |
