DELL OEM Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 (SP3) reinstallation CD

This CD comes with no instructions, no "serial number", and no "product code". However, it successfully installed XP SP3 on my Dell PC.

You have to do a "clean install"; i.e., onto a newly-formatted hard drive/partition. You'll also need a Dell PC or laptop that came with one of these operating systems:

Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows NT 4.0
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows XP Home Edition
Windows XP Media Center Edition
Windows XP professional.

My dual-core Dell came with Windows XP Media Center Edition. After 4 years, it had become unstable, plus Service Pack 3 wouldn't install, nor would the latest McAfee security suite. Microsoft recently announced that support for XP SP2 would cease this summer.

The obvious options were a clean install of XP or Windows 7. Microsoft's web site offers a free scan to see if your PC is "ready" for Windows 7. That scan identified numerous programs that I rely on which wouldn't work under W7; and W7 wouldn't recognize my primary printer.

If you Google on "Setting up Windows XP", the first site listed has Microsoft's instructions on using an XP reinstallation CD. MS recommends the "OS repair" option, which I tried, but that failed with "file-missing" error messages. Microsoft's next recommendation was "replace the operating system" option, but they didn't work either. (These options required an XP product code, and it accepted the code from the Dell sticker on the side of my PC.)

The only remaining option was a clean install, which worked; and no product code was required. That Microsoft site lists step-by-step instructions for this approach. However, instructions aren't mandatory, since the Reinstallation CD guides you through the process at each step, asking what you want to do. The first step is to tell the installer to reformat a partition on the hard drive of your choice. My Dell has 3 hard drives, and I picked a partition on a hard drive other than the C drive. Installation proceeded without incident from that point, taking about one hour.

The only "problem" encountered after the install was that my PC didn't recognize the Ethernet card on the Dell; so no Internet access was possible. I found the original Dell CD with the appropriate driver and installed it, which worked.

Here are some tips:

- Back up all data and personal software (e.g., the installation software) before starting. A safe approach is to make TWO backups. Imagine your reaction if your ONLY copy was unreadable.

- Make notes about settings that you may not remember; e.g., Outlook Express account details (e-mail).

- Early on, go to the Microsoft Windows Update site for the latest XP changes; as of this writing, there were over 70 updates, which took another hour to apply.

- Before installing your personal programs, install your Malware and firewall software, and update with the latest changes. I.e., protection from hackers and other miscreants.

- If your speakers don't work after the OS install, install the original Dell CD drivers for your sound system. Once you have an Internet connection, Dell's site should have any drivers you need.

Summary:

I took the advice of other reviewers and bought the CD from "thanks2iva", who delivered it very quickly. Given the low price, even if it didn't work, it was worth a try. Since it did work and my Dell now has a stable XP with Service Pack 3, I'm very pleased.
